FREQUENTLY ASKED OGOPOGO QUESTIONS
What is the Ogopogo?
The Ogopogo is a mythical creature who inhabits Canada’s Lake Okanagan. Sometimes referred to as a “monster", we prefer to think of them as misunderstood with a penchant toward being friendly and awesome.
Why did the team choose this name?
Many players on the team found their love of hockey after being introduced to the sport by the Coachella Valley Firebirds, AHL affiliate of the Seattle Kraken. Playing under the name of a fearsome cryptid seemed like a fun way to pay homage to these two cornerstone teams with mythical namesakes while also including the large Canadian population who call the Coachella Valley home during the winter months and share our rink and ice time.
There’s also the fact that when you first hear it, the name sounds a bit goofy and unassuming, but really refers to a powerful creature with many skills and personal depth. As we work to build up our hockey skills, that’s not a bad role model.
Who designed the logo?
The logo was designed by our goalie Tom Buck and drawn in Procreate. Blue and pink (along with purple on the jerseys) were chosen for their bright and fun qualities, along with the ability to represent the coed team and everyone who takes it upon themselves to wear an Ogopogos jersey.
Have people on the team been playing hockey for a long time?
No! Most of the team is made up of beginners. A few players have been on teams previously, but it was either a long time ago or very recently. We’re all very much adult beginners who have found a passion for hockey and committed to improving every day.
How many people can be on the team?
Our roster allows for anywhere between 12-20 players, and fortunately we tend to be pretty full. The team is currently playing in “C League,” which is the beginner level at our rink. Our goal is to one day to develop a B League team so that players can continue being part of the group as their skills develop.
How much does it cost to play on the team?
Tema dues range from about $350 - $575 for each 20 game season (more players = lower dues). Jerseys range from $75-$150.
Can we watch The Ogopogos play?
Games are played at the Berger foundation Iceplex in Palm Desert, California and are free to attend. The game schedule can always be found on our Home Page.
